Casco Viejo

Also known as Casco Antiguo, it is the historic and cultural gem of Panama City, cherished for its ancient colonial buildings, historic churches, and lively nightlife. Founded in 1673 after the destruction of the original Panama City by pirate Henry Morgan, it has experienced highs and lows over the years. During the colonial era, it was the fashionable place for Panama’s high society.
Today, Casco Viejo is experiencing a revival, with many buildings restored and converted into boutique hotels, restaurants, art galleries, and bars. It is popular among tourists and locals for its artistic ambiance and nightlife. It houses important landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Church of San José with its Golden Altar, and the Presidential Palace. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it blends historic charm with a modern twist.
You can begin your tour at Plaza de la Idependencia (Independence Square), where Panama declared its independence from Colombia. Visit the Canal Museum to learn about the history of the Panama Canal, the Mola Museum (MuMo), and the neighborhood’s galleries to immerse yourself in art and culture. Try some of the trendy cafes and restaurants serving everything from Panamanian signature dishes to international cuisine for all tastes. At sunset, head to one of the rooftop bars to enjoy views of the bay, the modern city, and the Amador Causeway islands.
